Using AI has become an everyday thing now. No matter which profession you are in, chances are high that your tasks now require the use of AI. But, is the authenticity of your craft in threat due to using AI tools?

The answer is both yes and no. Yes, because pattern-driven AI learns from what others have already done, and creates a concoction for you. This means plagiarism is often inevitable.

However, if you are using AI responsibly and ethically, you would be able to stay authentic, even while using AI tools. Let's discover how you can stay credible and trustworthy, even as you use AI as a professional.

Understanding What Authentic Work Means Today

Authentic work has never meant doing everything from scratch, and professionals have always used tools to make their work easier, but now, the only difference is how powerful those tools have become.

Generative AI Tools can write, suggest ideas, and even structure complex thoughts in seconds, which is what makes it so crucial to make your workflow easier, faster, and more simple.

But does this mean the end of authenticity? Of course not, as the use of tools doesn’t necessarily mean that your work can’t be authentic, but it is important to know what you are using the tool for. More importantly, if you want to stay authentic, you cannot leave the whole thing to generative AI.

A person who is producing authentic work knows exactly what they are creating, they can explain their work, adjust it as needed, and can take responsibility for what they have produced. Even if AI gives you an answer, it cannot say that it has ownership over what was created, because that will always remain with the person typing the prompt.

Why Showing Your Process Matters More Than Before

As AI makes it easier to produce polished results, people are looking beyond the final output and trying to understand how that work was created.

Most people are not completely okay with the use of AI, so if something seems mechanical and robotic, they try to look for any signs that will give them assurance of human touch. They can now use any AI detector to determine how much of your work is human.

This is why the process matters now more than ever. Most professionals should aim to be transparent about how they are managing to do the work they are doing. They should be open about which parts of the process are being generated by AI.

This helps the people interacting with their output understand the process. Sometimes it may be necessary to change how your work is presented, because showing parts of the process might help the client, the audience, or even your workplace understand that your craft is still your own.

This doesn’t mean you have to document everything. Being able to explain how you went from point A to the final result can help build trust, which is crucial in any profession.

Using AI As Support

Under no circumstances should AI be doing all your work. It doesn’t matter if you are an AI expert or a person simply using a tool; if you want to be authentic in your work, you can’t automate everything.

There is a big difference between using AI to help your work and using it to do your work, because when you use it as support, you are still behind the wheel. It is your idea getting enhanced with AI, so you might use it to edit your work or explore a thought you had.

This means the output still has you in it. Now, how much of you should be present in the work to be accepted as authentically yours? Many universities’ standard AI guideline says that anything above 30% AI is unacceptable.

This can be the rule of thumb, as it makes a lot of sense. For an output to be truly yours, at least 70% of it should be just you.

So stay in control and keep AI only as support, because when you rely too much on AI without thinking, the work may look good on the surface, but feel empty underneath, because it lacks depth, and people can sense that, even if they cannot explain why.

Adding Your Own Experience To The Work

AI is good at patterns, but it does not have any real-life experience like a human being, which means it does not know what it feels like to deal with a difficult client, make a mistake, or learn from years of practice.

This is why AI output on its own is very generic, and this is also something that would always be your biggest advantage

When you use AI, take what it gives you and build on it with your own insights, by adding examples from your work, adjusting the advice based on what you have seen, and including details that only someone with real experience would know and understand.

This turns generic content into something real and valuable, making your work harder to copy as it is based on your own journey.

Keeping Your Own Voice Strong

Every professional has a way of thinking and explaining things, which is what is called their own voice and work identity. And AI can copy tone, but it cannot sound exactly like your own voice because it often ends up sounding too neutral or too perfect.

To keep your authenticity, you need to shape the output so it sounds like you, and you can do that by changing certain phrases, adjusting the flow, or adding your natural way of explaining things.

This may take a bit more effort, but it makes a big difference because when your voice stays consistent, people begin to recognize your work, which can build trust over time.

Learning About AI To Use It Better

AI is changing quickly, with new tools and features appearing all the time. For professionals, staying updated is important because when you understand how AI works and where it makes mistakes, you use it more wisely, becoming less likely to trust it blindly and more likely to spot problems.

Knowledge always gives you a higher capacity to use it, and since you use it better, you start becoming more confident with it. You are no longer likely to be replaced by AI when you know that you can use it to create work that is not only authentic to you, but also the best output you can get from AI

Balancing Speed With Quality

Let’s face it: AI makes you more efficient, because it can help you work faster. However, is faster always better? Of course, it isn’t. Because if a fast output is not of quality, you might as well not use it.

Creating better work needs you to put in effort, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use AI. Use it for initial drafts or even edits, but the concept, the refining, and the final output have to have your input in them.

Focusing on speed often leads to work with no depth, which definitely won’t land with the ones who will have to interact with it.

If there is a menial, repetitive task, give it to AI. You take your time with planning, ideation, and execution, because it is your own understanding, judgment, and lived experience that will make the work more authentic, and you will stay productive without lowering the quality of your work.

The Value Only You Can Bring

AI cannot replace everything, because there are some things only you can bring. No, this isn’t just about humans; this is about that lived experience and skills only you have.

Certified professionals who have been in their own field have been working for a certain amount of time, during which they gained experience, learning, and hands-on practice. These are all things AI cannot do, and on top of that, it also can’t take ownership and responsibility for the work.

So, take this opportunity to bring to the table what only you can bring. Your value, effort, talent, and hard work will keep you relevant and irreplaceable.

Final Thoughts

AI tools are changing how work gets done, but it does not remove the need for authenticity, and nothing can be more authentic than the experience, talent, and hard work a certified professional can bring.

You don’t have to avoid AI. Use it to enhance your work, make sure never to completely leave your reigns in its algorithmic hand, and continue to inject your own knowledge and experience in your work

Authentic work can only come from professionals who are active thinkers and deeply involved with their work. Just because AI can do your work for you doesn’t mean you should let it do everything for you. Don’t be a passive creator in your own profession, because it can cost you your job.
